Our impact story is about resilience, children from Brazil, and love.
Who we are…
“Nosso Lar” (in English, “Our Home”) is a non-profit organization established in 1973 in Brasilia, Brazil’s capital, located in the Central region. Our mission is to accommodate children at risk under legal protection measures. This means children whose families, more specifically their parents, have severely mistreated them, and consequently lost their guard. Due to the negative psychological effects those aggressions may cause, Nosso Lar also provides professional health and socio-psycho-pedagogical services to these children.
Our current facilities count on 3 houses with 4/5 bedrooms with two dedicated caretakers per each house. In addition, an industrial kitchen with nutritionist-oriented meals prepared by careful hands to serve our little ones, and an amazing playground where they can play, run, socialize while regaining self-confidence, love and respect.
And then, we decided to do more for other kids!
In addition to accommodating children at risk, we also created “the sick kids lodging project” to serve as shelters for outpatient sick kids and their companions seeking treatment in Brasilia. For those who are not familiar with Brazil’s poor public health infrastructure, low-income families with kids undergoing severe diseases such as cancer treatments often travel from the poorest states to be treated where the resources may be available. Typically, outpatients migrate from the North and Northeast areas to Central and Southeast. Two houses with accommodations and structure were built to attend their needs. The children age ranges from 0 to 12 years old and come to us referred by the municipal health system of their cities.
“Nosso Lar” has been commended by the Childhood and Youth Court of the Federal District as a role mode institution and is maintained by covenants and donations.
Thanks to our donors and staff who support Nosso Lar and make the lives of those children a caring restart!
Problems, economic challenge…our resilience tested
The “sick kids lodging project” went into operation in 2015 and attended 254 families from 17 different states, in a total of 1,203 accommodations. The project was discontinued in 2017 due to lack of financial support. In view of the increasing needs to accommodate vulnerable people, it was reactivated early this year (2018) with the reopening of one house, thanks to individual contributions that sympathized with the cause.
We have made a commitment to our community…
“Nosso Lar” aims to reopen the second house in the second half of this year. The need of these children seeking medical treatment is urgent and additional financial support is required to make it happen. We are doing our part: An important annual event helps maintain the institution throughout the year happens on the month of June, the “Festa Junina”. Those attending will be treated to typical Brazilian food, will dress up like farmers, enjoy bonfires and dance the “quadrilha”. After Carnival, it is the second most important popular celebration in Brazilian culture.
