Plastic can take up to one thousand years to decompose. The material is created by heating up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thisisplastics.com\/plastics-101\/how-are-plastics-made\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natural gas and oil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ingredients that are strong and capable of surviving far longer than a human lifespan. Many kinds of plastic are not recyclable, meaning that some plastic wrap and packaging are only used once before they\u2019re sent to sit in a landfill for the next thousand years. Unfortunately, much of the plastic that we discard is not recycled or even makes it to a landfill. The garbage patch is so large, it spans the entire width of the area between Japan and the United States. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason so much plastic comes together into a ginormous mass of marine trash is that the area is surrounded by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/encyclopedia\/marine-debris\/?utm_source=BibblioRCM_Row\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Pacific Subtropical Gyre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A gyre occurs when ocean currents swirl around one calm, central area. The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre traps garbage in its currents and sends them to two calm central places; one closer to Japan and one closer to California. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, the amount of garbage collected by this gyre has grown, as there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/article\/great-pacific-garbage-patch-isnt-what-you-think\/?utm_source=BibblioRCM_Row\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7.7 million square miles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the North Pacific Ocean that the gyre circles around, continually adding trash via ocean currents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0a0e7ac elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"0a0e7ac\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-001290e\" data-id=\"001290e\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fb07017 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fb07017\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Danger of Plastic<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6411bb8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6411bb8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to envision large masses of trash floating around the ocean, and that is indeed what some of the great pacific garbage patch looks like. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, most of the plastic within the garbage patch is made up of used fishing gear. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/great-pacific-garbage-patch-plastics-environment\">National Geographic<\/a>, 46% of the plastic is fishing nets while 8% is microplastics. Although plastic can take hundreds of years to biodegrade, being violently transferred by ocean current can cause the man-made plastic products to break into smaller pieces. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, plastic is broken down into these microplastics, which are pieces of plastic less than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/2020\/08\/microplastics-in-virtually-every-crevice-on-earth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five millimeters long<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, yet are unable to degrade further. A congregation of microplastics along with other pieces of debris can block sunlight from travelling into the ocean, causing animals at the bottom of the food chain like plankton and algae to be deprived of sunlight and unable to survive. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/encyclopedia\/great-pacific-garbage-patch\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plankton and algae<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> die, the fish that eat them will not have enough food and begin to die as well, causing a cycle that will result in the death of animals all the way up the food chain in the ocean. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the cloudy presence of plastic-filled water is not the only threat caused by the great pacific garbage patch. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastic and microplastics in the ocean release chemicals like BPA that can cause health problems for people and problems for the environment.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1e2f821 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1e2f821\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The great pacific garbage patch is a problem so daunting that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/charles_moore_seas_of_plastic?language=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charles Moore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the scientist who discovered it, claimed that if one country tried to clean it up on their own, they would go bankrupt. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even removing the plastic would be complicated, as microplastics and tiny sea creatures are often the same size, so removing microplastics would likely lead to the accidental removal of animals. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best we as individuals can do in an attempt to solve this problem is to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/speakers\/charles_moore\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent more plastic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from entering the ocean in the first place, but governments around the world will need to work together to think of a long-term solution before more damage is done.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section
